We have a collapsable gate by evenflo. I’m not sure what else to call it, but it works great. It has eye screws that go into the wall & hooks into those. My 4 yr old opens & shuts it herself, so your 8 yr old shouldn’t have a problem wiith it. I refused to have one that I had to jump over cause I just can’t do that. This gate works great for that. I love it, i have a lareg doorway from my kitchen to my living room & was having trouble finding a gate to fit it without spending a fortune. I got this one at Walmart. i just bought a regular gate i have a 3 year old and she does just fine jumping over it your 8 yr old should have no problem doing the same
